Microbial desulfurization of coal for removing up to 50 3< of total sulfur from coal offers a method prior to combustion in a powerplant. Microbial removal of pyritic sulfur from coal is accomplished by two families of aerobic and acidophilic bacteria. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is one family of bacteria used.
