Millimeter-wave spectrometer for pollution research

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6852478
A microwave spectrometer for the detection of gaseous pollutants is described. The spectrometer operates at frequencies in the vicinity of 70 GHz and employs a Fabry-Perot interferometer as a sample cell. The interferometer is voltage tuned by means of a piezoelectric transducer which enables it to track the microwave source frequency. The operation and performance of the instrument is discussed and illustrated by measurements of diluted samples of sulfur dioxide. The noise contributions which limit the sensitivity are described and suggestions for future improvements are noted.
