During the first year of the contract starting November 1, 1968, the following activities were carried out. Improved data on the reflectance of distilled water was obtained using the reflectance apparatus at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These data were taken with sufficient accuracy and precision to allow determination of the optical constants. Additional data were taken on a saturated solution of sodium chloride in distilled water, and these reflectances were analyzed likewise to reveal the optical constants. Related to the analysis of these data was an extensive study of the polarization of concave defraction gratings in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region. When the above activities had been completed the equipment was disassembled, moved to the University of Tennessee and installed in a laboratory at that institution. Simultaneously with this move the design for a new liquid reflectivity apparatus was completed and construction was initiatied at the ORNL under contract with the University of Tennessee. The old equipment was placed in operating condition and preliminary data have been obtained on Dow Corning DC 704 diffusion pump oil (Tetramethyltetraphenyltrisiloxane). This oil was chosen because of its ubiquity in most vacuum ultraviolet monochromators where it exerts a strong influence on the reflectance and polarization of mirrors and gratings. 4 figs.
