District-heating supply from retrofitted power plants

Conference · · Proc. Int. Dist. Heat. Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6850624
Power plants located close to large heat load centers are good candidates for conversion to simultaneous production of electric power and heat. Two major modification options, retrofit of existing turbine-generators and replacement of existing turbine-generators with specially designed district heating units, are discussed for two coal-fired power plant units. The study found no technical barrier to conversion, but found that about three and a half times more heat can be extracted from units designed specifically for cogeneration than from modified units. 3 figures, 3 tables.
