Akron Recycle Energy System

Conference · · Proc. Int. Dist. Heat. Assoc.; (United States)

The Akron Recycle Energy System (RES), funded by the public sector and implemented by the private sector, incinerates municipal solid waste to generate energy for use by local consumers. The success of the project illustrates that substantial benefits can be gained when governments and industry work in tandem toward a common goal. The modified RES designed for Akron can reliably receive and process 329,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year. Normal operation is based on processing an average of 900 tons per day, and satisfying customer steam requirements without interruption. The plant employs 65 people, 25% fewer than before the retrofit.
