A new market for gas turbine combined heat and power (CHP) systems is opening up in Spain as a high pressure gas transmission system extends across the industrial regions of the country. Development of the gas transmission system started in 1975. LNG has been imported into Barcelona since 1970, initially to replace manufactured town gas in the local market. The network now extends 1581 km, with a further 672 km of local distribution lines, and covers the main industrial towns along the Ebro valley and in the Basque region. With Gaviota coming on stream in 1986 the network was extended to Burgos, and thence to Madrid last year. A separate branch network was laid along the east coast to Valencia in 1981. It is clear that industry will be the main beneficiary of the expanded gas supply. The aim is to substitute gas for heavy fuel oil in the industrial market. The price of gas is linked to that of heavy fuel oil, which has seen a 50% reduction in price during the last two years. The price of electricity has risen 20% in the same period. First CHP operators to cash in on the availability of gas are in the pulp and paper industry. Several cogeneration systems put in operation by the paper industry are described.
