Constraints on cosmic magnetic monopoles imposed by the galactic magnetic field

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Constraints on a hypothetical galactic halo of magnetic monopoles imposed by the galactic magnetic field are discussed. If the field is due to electric currents then a disk-stabilizing galactic monopole halo cannot exist unless the monopole mass m/sub M/> or approx. =10/sup 21/ GeV and the monopole flux F/sub M/< or approx. =5 x 10/sup -15/ cm/sup -2/ s/sup -1/. However, if the galactic field is due to monopole charge-density fluctuations then a halo can exist provided m/sub M/> or approx. =10/sup 17/ GeV and F/sub M/< or approx. =5 x 10/sup -11/ cm/sup -2/ s/sup -1/.
