International acid test

After studying the problems with acid rain in this country, the author traveled to Scandinavia and Switzerland in 1980 to take a look at the entire picture. It was determined that acid fallout is not just an American or European problem; it afflicts all densely populated, industrialized nations that use fossil fuels to produce energy. Japan, Canada, Norway, Sweden, and Germany have moved decisively to clean up their skies. However, major exporters of acid rain - especially Britain and the US - have failed to act, leaving the whole world in jeopardy. But as more and more countries experience the damage of acid rain firsthand, the tide of international opinion may turn. It has already turned to some extent. In 1979 the United Nations Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution produced a pact signed by 30 countries, including the United States, to reduce air pollution. In addition, the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe convinced 21 national to reduce their sulfur dioxide emissions by at least 30% by 1993.
