After 30 yr of research and development in high-level waste (HLW) vitrification in France, commercial service is now on line at the La Hague reprocessing plant at the R7 and T7 facilities. Results accumulated so far at these facilities show that HLW vitrification in France meets the criteria of an industrially mastered process and that the resulting glass meets all required quality standards. By May 1993, the number of glass canisters produced was 1629 at R7 (started in June of 1989) and 314 at T7 (started in July of 1992). The total conditioned activity is >26 million TBq. This corresponds to the HLW from the reprocessing of >5000 t of UO[sub 2] equivalent.
