American coal companies are looking to increasing their business in Asia, where steam coal demand is expected to double by 2005. Some are investing in coal companies in Australia, while others believe there will remain a market for exported American coal. The Japanese are interested in diversifying their supply, and Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong are expected to bring on line 90 coal-fired generating plants in the next decade. The demand just for those plants will be 125 million tons.
