The article in question considered the important problem of selecting an economically effective scheme for cleaning hard-to-clean coals from the Karaganda field. On the basis of an analysis of four technological flowschemes involving combinations of heavy-medium equipment, jigs, and flotation machines, the authors concluded that cleaning of lump and small coals by jigging and recleaning of the intermediate product in hydrocyclones of the heavy-medium type and flotation of the slurry is the most economical system. Minimum corrected costs per ton of concentrate are obtained in this manner. The present authors do not share the author's pessimism regarding the difficulties encountered in the introduction of heavy-medium cleaning. New calculations made from the original data lead to different conclusion. It follows from cost-effectiveness estimates made on the basis of these data that scheme IV is the most economical. With a washery throughput of the order of 6 million tons/year of run-of-mine coal, the economic effect produced by introduction of scheme IV in place of scheme I is 4.8 million rubles/year, while that resulting from replacement of scheme III with scheme IV is 0.4 million rubles/year. A similar economic effect is obtained when schemes III and IV are compared. (The different schemes are defined in the paper). (LTN)
