The critical flow of superfluid /sup 4/He through a small orifice was studied. The small orifice consisted of a hole approx.170 nm in diameter in a free-standing foil approx.100 nm thick. The experimental cell was a two chamber acoustic resonator completely filled with liquid /sup 4/He and was operated at frequencies between 400 and 2900 Hz. At the critical rate of flow, the phase difference of the order parameter through the small orifice was found to decrease linearly with increasing temperature from 0.4 K to 1.9 K. In four runs, the critical phase difference at T = 0.95 K was found to be 31 x 2..pi.. rad, and in two later runs it was 16 x 2..pi.. rad. The linear decrease of the critical phase difference with temperature is compared to the predictions of the model proposed by Langer and Fisher.
