Superstrings in a generic supersymmetric curved space

Supersymmetry (off-shell) is necessary and sufficient for the preservation of the value of the critical dimension and the cancellation of anomalies when the superstring is embedded in a generic curved space. This is achieved by embedding the doubly-covered general linear (spinorial curved space) group anti GL(10,R) in anti GQ(10,R), a non-simple real form derived from the exponentiation of the hyperexceptional superalgebra q(10).
