  1. Gas-Cooled Reactor Associates, San Diego, CA (United States)
The gas turbine version of the modular high-temperature gas reactor (MHTGR-GT) is an advanced nuclear power system that addresses the issues confronting nuclear power, including competitiveness and financial risks. Recent cost-estimate updates and analyses indicate that evaluated generation costs for the MHTGR-GT system are competitive with advanced coal-fired plants and natural gas combined-cycle plants projected for the first quarter of the next century. Competitive and financial risk mitigation benefits accrue from the inherent high-temperature and passive safety features of the basic MHTGR concept. Using state-of-the-art fuel and component technologies, the MHTGR-GT concept generates electricity at a net efficiency near 48%, which is nearly a 50% improvement over the light water reactor technologies. This results in improved economics per unit of delivered power. Further, the high efficiency results in reductions of discharged wastes per delivered unit of power, such as spent fuel and reject heat to the environment.
