Gasification of coal and wood

Pulp and paper mills may be able to reduce their oil and gas requirements by gasifying coal or wood to produce a low- or medium-Btu gas. Ideal applications for gasifiers for any mill include the direct firing of lime kilns, space heating, makeup-air heating, and paper drying, as well as the conversion of existing gas- or oil-fired boilers. A small gasifier such as a Wellman-Galusha unit is suitable for onsite fuel-gas production for mill applications. Representative cost information for a number of situations includes such variables as the quantity of gasifiers or total heat generation required, volumetric heat content, required gas purity, coal cost, and financing method. Although no large wood-gasification installations are in operation, a number of small wood gasifiers are becoming commercialy available.
