During the late 1980s, an increased awareness developed throughout the commercial nuclear industry concerning the importance of formal training for engineering support personnel-training designed to enhance the engineers' ability to perform specific duties and promote overall plant safety and reliability. The National Academy for Nuclear Training issued ACAD 91-017, [open quotes]Guidelines for Training and Qualification of Engineering Support Personnel,[close quotes] in December 1991. These guidelines established a three-tiered approach to engineering support personnel training: (1) orientation, (2) position-specific training, and (3) continuing training.
