Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells. Acceptance test of Gulton Industries, Inc. , 5. 0/sup 2/ ampere-hour Nimbus cells

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6842952
Five ampere-hour nickel-cadmium Nimbus secondary spacecraft cells were evaluated in order to derive specific information concerning performance characteristics and limitations, including cycle life under various electrical and environmental conditions, and cell weaknesses, including causes of failure of present designs. It was concluded that the ceramic seals of these cells were satisfactory as evidenced by the presence of no leakers in the 30 cells tested; internal shorting was a weak point as evidenced by five rejects among the cells tested, and the capacity of the cells was in the acceptable range of 5.00 to 6.63 ampere-hours to 1.00 volt. It was recommended that an investigation be initiated to determine the causes of and methods to eliminate internal shorting problems.
