The practice of eliminating highwalls so that coal-mined lands are returned to approximate original contour is an expensive operation. By drawing graphical curves for dozer and blasting costs, the most economical contour for backfilling highwalls can be selected to meet regulations. A procedure for developing the necessary curves, which should lead to the lowest backfill costs per linear foot of highwalls, is given.
