The profitability of ethylene production is related mainly to plant capacity use. The world ethylene capacity squeeze in 1988 and 1989 caused net margins to soar to unprecedented levels. The rush to capture the alluring profits by increasing production via new capacity additions will cause increasing competition and a normal decline in profitability over the next few years. A period of reasonable profit stability is expected to follow. According to the author, the world petrochemical industry is now operating at the high-capacity use, high-profitability end of the spectrum.
