Hydrogen concentration depth profiles on surfaces of SiO[sub 2] glass fractured slowly in water and rapidly in oil were determined by nuclear reaction analysis. It was found that water enters SiO[sub 2] glass during slow crack growth in water. The present observation has important implications for slow crack growth as well as fatigue of some silica glasses, suggesting the type of reaction involved in stress-corrosion. The correct strength reduction mechanism of silica glass under stress by water in the environment must involve entry of water into the glass.
