Interaction of far-infrared and mid-infrared laser transitions in the NH/sub 3/ laser

Laser emission on the conventional 12.8-..mu..m NH/sub 3/ laser transition, optically pumped by the CO/sub 2/ 9R16 line, can be completely quenched and replaced by emission at 12.2..mu..m. Cascading far-infrared laser transitions in the excited ammonia ..nu../sub 2/ state are shown to be responsible for the shift in wavelength.
