Movement key to prefab-module use

The advantages in using prefabricated modules (normally skid-mounted) in oil and gas production or refining facilities involve high-quality construction, due to the use of specially designed equipment in the shop; improved equipment testing and operator training; schedule control and acceleration; and direct cost reduction. Prefabricated modules can be used in the construction of two- and three-phase separators, dehydration units, desulfurization and sulfur-recovery units, ammonia and ethylene processes, and especially cryogenic refrigeration units. Their main disadvantage in the use of prefabricated modules is the high cost and sometimes difficulty of moving the heavy and bulky modules from the shop to the site. Procedures for transporting prefabricated modules on water, on land, and in the air are discussed and illustrated for the case of a modular petrochemical plant to be transported from interior U.S. locations to a coastal location in Latin America; all the necessary steps are tabulated in the necessary order.
