Ring nebulae around Wolf--Rayet stars: filaments and diffuse matter in NGC 6888

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. Lett. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6838547
New interferometric observations of the diffuse emission of NGC 6888 are reported. The halfwidths of the H..cap alpha.. and lambda6584 (N II) lines emitted by the smoothly distributed interfilament gas are ..delta..V(H..cap alpha..)=250 +- 50 km/sec, ..delta..V((N II))=210 +- 60 km/sec, values five times the halfwidth of these lines in the filaments. The contrast R=I/sub fil//I/sub dif/ of the filaments above the diffuse background is found to be R(H..cap alpha..)=12 +- 3, R((N II))=6 +- 3. The nature of the ring nebulae observed around Wolf--Rayet stars is discussed.
