Diagnostic testing arrangement for an electric cooking appliance incorporating commutated relay switching circuits

A power control and diagnostic circuit is described for an appliance of the type having electric heating units and user actuable input means enabling the user to select from a plurality of power settings for each unit. The control and diagnostic circuit comprises: pilot relays, each relay having contacts serially connected to an associated one of the heating units forming a pilot relay/heating unit combination. The pilot relay/heating unit combinations are divided into two or more sets, within each set. The combinations are connected in parallel to form a parallel array for each set; a master relay associated with each of the parallel arrays, having a set of contacts serially connecting its associated one of the parallel arrays to an external AC power supply; and a commutating diode associated with each master relay operatively coupled in parallel with the contacts of the associated master relay.
