Over the past several years desiccant based air conditioning systems have found increased applications as humidity control devices for non-industrial structures, such as schools, homes, hospitals, and commercial buildings. A variety of porous solid absorbents (solid desiccants) and aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and organic compounds (liquid desiccants) will simultaneously remove moisture and pollutants from indoor air by co-sorption. Pollutants that are representative of a broad spectrum of those found indoors were selected on the basis of their concentration, frequency of occurance, and associated health effects to provide an assessment of desiccant systems.
