Title: (Theory of elementary particle studies in weak interaction and grand unification and studies in accelerator design): Annual report. [High energy physics]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6838358

Research related to particle accelerators is reported, covering synchrotron radiation pumped x-ray lasers, laser acceleration of particles, novel insertion devices, and thin layered interference mirrors. Research in the areas of supersymmetry and grand unification was also pursued as well as more traditional aspects of the standard model. This work includes improving bounds on the number of neutrinos, string phenomenology, and standard model physics at the SSC. Further activities include diagnostics of quark matter by measurements of dilepton and photon signatures, initial temperature and thermalization time of quark-gluon plasma, the branching model in central production, and quark distributions in kaons and hyperons. Factorization in hadron-hadron collisions, jet angular size as seen in electron-positron annihilation, and heavy particle production in hadron-hadron collisions were studied. Applications of the Skyrme model to the standard model of weak interactions were examined. The problem of finding the most general action principle for supersymmetric point particles was studied. A detailed study was made of vortices appearing in an SO(10) grand unified model. (LEW)
