The [sup 57]Fe magnetic hyperfine interactions in GdBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 2.7]Fe[sub 0.3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]] associated with iron in the Cu(II) plane site exhibit temperature-dependent behavior suggesting a crossover in magnetic dimensionality as compared with Y-based 1:2:3 compounds of similar levels of iron doping and degree of oxygenation. It is proposed that oxygen-mediated Fe-Gd exchange interactions are responsible for the appearance of three-dimensional magnetic behavior and a concomitant decrease in [ital T][sub [ital c]] with eventual loss of superconductivity in samples prepared under conditions that favor maximum Cu(II) plane-site iron occupation. For the level of Fe doping used, the random Fe substitution on Cu(II) sites and the presence of the Gd ions between adjacent Cu(II) planes lead to an unusual situation of stronger interplanar and weaker intraplanar magnetic interactions.
