Continuing to substitute natural gas for oil whenever possible, the Soviets are increasing their natural gas production and consumption to counterbalance falling growth rates in oil production. In 1980, the USSR produced 16.2 trillion CF (435 billion m/sup 3/) of gas, constituting 27% of the energy produced that year; oil contributed 45%. For 1985, the gas-production goal is 22-24 TCF (600-640 billion m/sup 3/) or 33% of the energy produced; oil's share will fall to 40%. Gas exports reached 2.2 TCF (60 billion m/sup 3/) in 1980.
