All things point to strong Gulf of Mexico activity

Between Uncle Sam, Opec and the supply and demand equation, there has been nothing but turmoil in the oil industry for the last couple of years. But out of all this the Gulf of Mexico is now showing signs of stability based on Advance Drilling Data's Summary for the first quarter of 1988. This is also evident from the fact that there was an average of 207 drilling rigs under contract during the first quarter. The highest count was recorded in week 4 (Jan. 27, 1988) when 211 rigs were working, and the low was set during week 11 with a count of 199. This is in contrast to the first quarter of 1987 when there was an average of 122 rigs under contract, with the high being week 1 with 130 rigs, and the low being week 5 with 116 rigs operating. This stability is further illustrated by the fact that during the first quarter of 1988 a historical trend was broken - that is, the rig count normally drops from the end of one year to the beginning of a new year. During the fourth quarter of 1987 the average rig count on a weekly basis was 198, and it reached 200 well into the fourth quarter in the week of November 18. However, during the first quarter of 1988 the rig count was over 200 every week except for the week of March 16 when it stood at 199. In conclusion, the positive factors would outweigh the negative and the Gulf of Mexico will continue to be the main focus for domestic drilling in the United States.
