A computer simulation has been developed to model the actions of magnetic switching circuits. Simulations are compared to experimental data obtained from a one-stage magnetically switched circuit. Comparisons between experimental and computed switch voltage and current waveforms are made for various operating conditions, pre-saturation leakage currents, and for energy losses. The computer simulation models the actual core saturation process, including eddy current shielding. The diffusion equation is solved using finite differences to determine the distribution of magnetic field quantities in the core of the switch, and then the external response at the switch terminals is incorporated into the response of the entire circuit. The simulation uses the actual B-H loop of the switch core material. Energy losses are also calculated. Standard energy losses (eddy current, hysteresis) have been partitioned according to individual mechanisms within the simulation and compared to losses determined experimentally. (Individual energy loss components are not distinguishable from each other at the switch terminals.) Anomalous losses were determined by subtracting the calculated standard loss components from total losses. The anomalous losses were accounted for in the simulation with an effective core material resistivity, different from the actual resistivity. The computer program has been used to model a single stage magnetically switched circuit. Detailed comparisons were made between experimental and simulated voltage, current, and energy losses at three different operating voltages. Comparisons were made among calculations from experimental data, the computer simulation, and approximation formulae for leakage currents and eddy current energy losses. The computer simulations are much closer to experimental data than the approximation formulae.
