Reburning for cyclone boiler retrofit NO[sub x] control

Reburning represents a promising retrofit combustion NO[sub x] control technology for cyclone boilers. It involves the injection of natural gas, oil, or coal into the boiler above the main combustion zone in amounts equivalent to 10-25% of the total heat input. This creates a fuel-rich reburn zone in the middle region of the boiler in which NO[sub x] is converted to environmentally benign molecular nitrogen. Two full-scale utility demonstrations - one using natural gas as the reburn fuel, the other using coal - indicate that NO[sub x] emission reductions of about 40-60% are possible with minimal impacts on boiler operation.
