We have measured hysteresis losses, W(h/sub 0/, h/sub b/, H/sub b//sub 0/), in ribbons of VTi and Nb subjected to oscillating magnetic fields of various amplitudes h/sub 0/ directed transverse to a static bias magnetic field H/sub b//sub 0/, hence the name, noncollinear regime. A second bias field h/sub b/ along h/sub 0/ may also be introduced. H/sub b//sub 0/ and h/sub 0/ are directed along the length and width of the ribbon respectively or vice versa (90/sup 0/ rotation). The families of data curves are compared with the predictions of double critical state models where (i) dB/dx = +- F/sub P/(B)/B governs the critical gradients of the magnetic induction and (ii) dtheta/dx = +- F/sub P/(B)F(theta)/B/sup 2/, the spatial variation of the orientation of the sheets of flux lines, with theta = 0 along H/sub b//sub 0/. The effect on W(h/sub 0/,h/sub b/,H/sub b//sub 0/) of choosing F(theta) = 1/tan theta, k and k/(1+Vertical BarthetaVertical Bar)/sup 2/ is illustrated and the latter is seen to yield the best agreement. The locus of the magnetization along the length and width of the samples, and , have been monitored separately and simultaneously during the cycles of h/sub 0/(t) for various h/sub 0/ and H/sub b//sub 0/ with h/sub b/ = 0 or h/sub 0/.
