95 GHz methanol maser in Orion-KL

The Hat Creek millimeter interferometer has been used to map 11 different molecular species toward Orion-KL in order to better probe the chemistry and kinematics of that region. A methanol maser with brightness temperature greater than 500 K is found to be coincident with the infrared source IRc6. The maser contributes less than 10 percent of the flux in the methanol line and so was undetected in early observations of this line. Most of the methanol flux originates from a region just south of the infrared source IRc4 and from a plume which extends at least 25 arcsec to the southeast from this peak. Methanol emission is detected from the southwest edge of the 10 km/s ridge cloud, in a direction where a cluster of water masers is found. Thermal CH/sub 3/OH emission appears to be poorly correlated with HDO and HC3N emission. This is expected if methanol is formed by ion-molecule chemistry. 26 references.
