PSP resins, new thermosetting binders for advanced composites
Production procedures and mechanical properties at various thermal levels of PSP resins, as matrices for reinforced laminates, are examined. The PSP resins represent a new class of heterocyclic aromatic polymers, where the prepolymer consists of a mixture of oligomers of small molecular weight. The PSP resin is discussed relative to the prepolymer and the neat cured resin. Other topics discussed include fabrication of laminates in terms of prepregs (impregnating varnishes, impregnation) and prepreg processing (press molding, vacuum bag processing). Also discussed are the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of PSP-unidirectional HTS carbon-reinforced laminates, as well as the retention of mechanical properties under thermal aging, and water aging at room and boiling temperatures. It is shown that the PSP resin is a viable industrial source material for use at both room and high temperatures.
