From recent experiments on low-energy Compton scattering on the proton, we extract a value (15.0[plus minus]3.0)[times]10[sup [minus]4] fm[sup 3] for the paramagnetic polarizability [beta][sub [ital p]] of the proton. We use the data on pion photoproduction to obtain a value (13[plus minus]3)[times]10[sup [minus]4] fm[sup 3] for the [Delta] contribution to [beta][sub [ital p]], much larger than that obtained from the quark model.
