Phi production and the OZI rule in. pi. /sup +/d interactions at 10 GeV/c

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6831715
A study of the Okubo Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule in ..pi../sup +/d interactions at 10 GeV/c has been performed using the Large Aperture Solenoid Spectrometer (LASS) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Measurements of the cross sections sigma(..pi../sup +/n ..-->.. phi p) = 179 +- 72 nb and sigma(..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. phi ..delta../sup + +/) = 172 +- 75 nb for the OZI forbidden reactions ..pi../sup +/n ..-->.. phi p and ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. phi ..delta../sup + +/ are consistent with the hypothesis of the phi being produced solely by its nonstrange quark component as determined from the octet-singlet mixing angle resulting from application of the Gell-Mann-Okubo mass formula to the vector meson nonet. A cross section upper limit for the interesting OZI rule associated reaction ..pi../sup +/n ..-->.. K/sup +/ phi ..lambda.. is measured to be sigma(..pi../sup +/n ..-->.. K/sup +/ phi ..lambda..) < 66 nb. A cross section is established for the K/sup +/K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ decay mode of the phi prime; sigma(..pi../sup +/n ..-->.. phi'p)B(phi' ..-->.. K/sup +/K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/) = 528 +- 290 nb. An upper limit for the K/sub s//sup 0//K/sup +-/..pi../sup -+/ decay mode of the phi prime is established as a function of the phi prime mass.
