The calculation of cosmogenic nuclide production rates by solar and galactic cosmic ray particles requires a detailed modelling of the propagation of medium-energy particles in thick targets, of production and propagation of secondary particles and of the nuclear reactions which finally produce these nuclides. Cross sections for the production of residual nuclides by p-, n- and {sup 4}He-induced reactions are the basic requirement for any physical interpretation of cosmogenic nuclides in terrestrial and extraterrestrial matter. In this work, a survey is given on the present status of model calculations, on experimental and theoretical cross sections for the production of cosmogenic nuclides and on thick-target experiments simulating the irradiation of meteoroids by galactic protons. Exemplarily, some interpretations of cosmogenic nuclides in extraterrestrial matter are presented.
