Photoproduction of negative pions on bound nucleons

The differential cross section for the reaction /sup 12/C(..gamma.., ..pi../sup -/p)/sup 11/C, measured in the region of photoexcitation of the ..delta..(1232) resonance, is analyzed in terms of the distorted-wave impulse approximation and the nuclear shell model. The energy dependence of the cross section dsigma/d..cap omega..* for the reaction n(..gamma.., ..pi../sup -/)p is obtained.
