A molecular model of the /sup 16/O nucleus is used in the Glauber theory to calculate the cross sections for the elastic scattering of protons by /sup 16/O and for the inelastic scattering of protons and pions. The inelastic scattering involves the excitation of the 3/sup -/ level (6.13 MeV). The incident particles have an energy approx.1 GeV. The /sup 16/O nucleus is assumed to consist of four ..cap alpha.. clusters whose equilibrium positions are the vertices of a regular tetrahedron. The mechanism for the excitation of the nuclear level and the excitation cross sections are shown to be extremely sensitive to the nuclear model. For the model used here the 3/sup -/ collective level is excited through multiple collisions. The results give a good description of experimental data for values of momentum transfer up to that corresponding to the maximum of the inelastic cross section. More detailed and more reliable measurements of the inelastic cross sections would yield strong arguments for or against the molecular model for the /sup 16/O nucleus.
