The intensity of luminescence from the /sup 2/E state of Cr(bpy)/sub 3//sup 3 +/ (bpy = 2, 2'-bipyridine) is lower in D/sub 2/O, although the /sup 2/E lifetime is unchanged, indicating that the /sup 4/T/sub 2/ (precursor to /sup 2/E) is sensitive to the isotopic nature of the solvent. A photophysical mechanism is proposed for Cr(NN)/sub 3//sup 3 +/ complexes. (DLC)
