Injector for coupled pipe

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6825316
This patent describes an apparatus for injecting pipe or tubing into a well or withdrawing it therefrom, comprising: a. frame means; and b. endless-type chain drive means mounted in the frame means for gripping and moving the pipe or tubing into or out of the well, the chain drive means including: i. drive chain means including a pair of opposed endless drive chains disposed in a common plane and spaced apart providing a pathway for the pipe or tubing therebetween. ii. upper and lower pressure beam means in each of the pair of endless drive chains movable toward and away from each other. The upper beam means is spaced above the lower beam means to provide a non-gripping area therebetween, the pressure beams having outwardly extending trunnion means slidably disposed in slots in side plates of the frame means, iii. friction-reducing roller chain means interposed between the pressure beam means and the drive chain means, iv. means for independently moving the upper and the lower pressure beam means toward and away from each other to cause the drive chain means to grip the pipe or tubing at upper and lower spaced apart locations and to release such grip at such spaced apart locations, and v. means for driving the drive chain means to move the pipe or tubing into or out of the well.
