The Alaska outer continental shelf (OCS) will play an important role in supplying the U.S. with oil and gas during the rest of this century. Starting in the late 1980s and continuing through the 1990s, production from 10 lease sale areas could help ease the U.S. transition from imports to alternative sources. This study examines six of these areas and the important technical issues. Environmental constraints, locational considerations, platform design parameters, and oil and gas transportation strategy are analyzed. An economic analysis has been developed which may be used to evaluate lease sale areas. The six areas are: the Eastern Gulf of Alaska; the Western Gulf of Alaska (Kodiak); Lower Cook Inlet; Norton Sound; St. George Basin; and, North Aleutian Shelf. 2 refs.
