Spectrophotometric determination of americium(IV) in nitric acid solutions

A spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of americium(IV) from its light absorption at wavelength 500 nm in 1 M nitric acid in the presence of potassium phosphotungstate (epsilon/sub 500/ = 1277 +/- 17). The determinable americium concentrations lie with 220-10 ..mu..g/ml. The method can be recommended for the determination of americium in pure solutions and in the presence of equal amounts by weight of curium, and at considerable excess of several fission elements. The error in the determination of americium does not exceed 2%.
