A method for determining the relative rate constants for hydrogen abstraction by benzyl radicals from known or potential donor molecules is described. Rate constants for the thermal decomposition of dibenzylmercury used as a source of benzyl radical were measured. Triphenylsilane deuterated at the silyl position was selected as the reference donor. Data are presented for hydrogen abstraction from tetralin, and the expected linear relationship was noted. (BLM)
