Proposed sediment quality criteria for the protection of benthic organisms: Phenanthrene

The criteria presented in the document are the U.S. EPA's best recommendation of the concentrations of a substance in sediment that will not unacceptably affect benthic organisms. These criteria are applicable to a variety of freshwater and marine sediments because they are based on the biologically available concentration of the substance in sediments. These criteria do not protect against additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects of contaminants or bioaccumulative effects to aquatic life or human health.
