A procedure for determining the parameters of the equilibrium plasma configuration in a stellarator by means of external magnetic measurements is discussed. The diamagnetic signal, the total current in the plasma, and the flux of the poloidal field of plasma currents, averaged over the major radius, have been measured. A theoretical model for the equilibrium of a plasma in a stellarator based on a system of averaged MHD equations is used to analyze the results. This procedure has been used in experiments in the Uragan-3 torsatron. The arrangement and calibration of the sensors for dealing with the effect of the metallic environment are discussed.
