Chromosomal loss at 9p21-22 has been implicated in the genesis of different types of primary tumors. The gene p16[sup INK4], an inhibitor of activated cyclin D-cdk4 complexes, recently emerged as a candidate tumor suppressor gene when it was localized to 9p21. The authors selected 75 primary tumors that displayed alleleic loss of the region. They then amplified exons 1 and 2, cloned the amplified products, and sequenced p16 from pooled clones. They conclude from the results of sequencing that p16 is not the primary target of 9p21-22 loss in a large number of nonmelanoma primary tumors. 14 refs., 1 fig., 1 tab.
