This patent describes a lubricating oil additive prepared by the process comprising: (A) in a first stage reacting at about 140/sup 0/-180/sup 0/C. a mixture comprising 100 parts by weight of at least one aliphatic olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon containing from about 8 to 36 carbon atoms and about 1 to 160 parts by weight of at least one fatty acid ester with elemental sulfur to obtain an intermediate, and (B) in a second stage reacting at about 110/sup 0/-140/sup 0/C., the intermediate with additional sulfur and from about 25 to 100 parts by weight based on the total weight of combined the aliphatic olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon and the fatty acid ester, a dimer of cyclopentadiene or lower C/sub 1-4/ alkyl substituted cyclopentadiene dimer.
