Superplasticity has been observed in several different fine-grained ceramics including yttria-containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZPs). Evidence for superplasticity in these materials has been obtained both indirectly from compression tests as well as directly from tension tests. A tensile elongation-to-failure of over 800% has now been recorded for a ZrO{sub 2}-5.2wt.%Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} material. Despite the fact that Y-TZPs can exhibit large strains to failure, the exact deformation mechanisms responsible for this behavior are still controversial. The authors discuss how, in order to gain further insight into mechanisms responsible for large tensile elongations, several investigators have attempted to measure the strain rate sensitivity of Y-TZPs at different temperatures.
