Picosecond CO/sub 2/ laser pulses and applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6820340
In this paper, we shall report some of the recent progress in picosecond CO/sub 2/ laser generation and their applications in studying the infrared physics of molecules and semiconductors. There are several methods of generation of picosecond CO/sub 2/ laser pulses such as mode-locking of high pressure CO/sub 2/ laser oscillators, semiconductor switching of a nanosecond TEA CO/sub 2//sup 3/ laser, and Optical Free Induction Decay (OFID). The last method has been employed in our laboratory to produce 1 to 5 MW CO/sub 2/ pulses with a duration changeable from 30 ps to 300 ps. It is a convenient laser source for the study of molecules and semiconductors.
